Greg Thornton wins FIA World Championship in Jerez!

  • Greg and Classic Team Lotus

Greg Thornton took the FIA Masters Historic Formula One World Championship title at Jerez, Spain this month.

Thornton, in his first season of racing with Masters HFO, fought off a challenge from Ian Simmonds (Tyrrell 012) to win the first race in Jerez, coming second in the second race meaning a win

on the aggregate of the two parts, having won part one by 12 seconds.

In a cat and mouse battle, Simmonds scored his first F1 race win, but as Greg Thornton in the Lotus 92 stayed glued to his tail throughout the 25-minute race.

Greg’s combined race times gave him the win from Simmonds and with it the Post-1978 Championship title!

Congratulations to the lead mechanic of the car, Ted Fiddy who, together with his Classic Team Lotus colleagues did a great job to help Greg achieve his win.

The celebrations did not stop there. Last season’s champion Andrew Beaumont came third in the FIA Masters Pre 1978 Championship in his type 76, 4th in class in his type 24 and Dan Collins had his first Masters F1 podium in his type 91. Well done to mechanics Lewis Cullington, Tim Gardner and Kevin Smith for running reliable and fast cars and supporting the drivers throughout the season.
