Greg Thorntons Recovery

Unfortunately we must report that Greg crashed his March 761 at Road America when he was chasing pole in qualifying a few months ago. Whist in turn 7 he went to deep and dropped a wheel off of the track, the car span 90 degrees to the left, slid across the track and straight into the wall. Although Greg took his hands off the wheel and feet off the pedals the impact of the crash forced the steering wheel back over 6 inches forcing Greg’s hand back with it and his arm hit the bulk-head column  behind him.

36 hours later Greg visited A&E back in the UK, after having an X-ray privately done he was told it was just minor trauma and would heal within a couple of weeks, so Greg carried on with the season taking fastest lap in Race one at the Silverstone Classic and grabbing pole in the Formula Junior in Germany. In Monterey, Laguna Seca, California Greg was still having problems with with his right arm, it couldn’t support its own weight. Nick C one of America’s leading orthopedic doctors specialising in shoulders (a close friend of Ron Maydon) asked Greg to do a few tests in the paddock, and he said in no uncertain terms the shoulder was in a bad way.

Greg then flew back to the UK the next day, returned to A&E and was told he needed an MRI, got one that night and the MRI confirmed Greg had his rotatory cuff detached and also considerate damage to his bicep muscle. Meaning Nick in California was right. Greg had to have an operation on his shoulder last week as this was never going to heal alone and that the operation was imperative to his mobility and strength in the arm/ shoulder. Recovery is going well and plans to be back on the grid in Austin Texas for the end of October as long as recovery continues to be successful.
