1973 Chevron B24
1972 saw Chevron’s first venture into F5000 with the B24 and like most of Chevron’s first ventures, it won on its debut.
Our car is the works car. The very car that in 1973, won the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch. A race that saw F1 cars and F5000 cars compete in the same race and with Peter Gethin piloting our B24 to victory.
Built for the 1973 season by Doug Shierson, this one of ten B24s ever built. There are eight according to Chevrons chassis register but the register does not include the works car, our car, or one built in 1974.
It went on to have various successes in the US and even spent a stint as a CanAm car after being converted in 1977. Sometime in the late 90’s it was rebult back into its original specification. Back into the most famous F5000 ever!
Since owning the car Titan Historic Racing have raced the car in New Zealand during the 2011/2012 Tasman revival series and at Hampton Downs in 2012.
2012 also saw the car and the team racing in Australia. Firstly in the Phillip Island Classic event in Melbourne and secondly at the Australian GP support race. Greg piloted the car home to three wins at Phillip Island, but unfortunately the car suffered some damage at the Australian GP, only superficial but could not finish the race.
Converting the car into a Cam-Am car was a fairly common thing to do in the day. Using a proven chassis was a much easier way to produce a winning car, and what better car use than the winner of the Race of Champions!
It was driven by Danny Johnson in 1981. It was never going to win any beauty awards in this guise but the car proved to be competitive still, nearly ten years after that amazing result at Brands Hatch.
In a cruel twist of fate in was badly damaged in workshop fire here at Titan Historic Racing in June 2012. Thankfully enough of the car survived to be able to restore her back to her former glory, to see the restoration project taken on by Chevron visit their site here – Chevron – A Phoenix rises from the ashes
The car and Greg have been busy ever since winning numerous races all around the world.
