Silverstone Classic 2016

Where do we start with Silvertsone classic, by far one of the greatest race weekend in the racing calendar with someone for everyone for all ages and this one defiantly didn’t disappoint. Greg and team Titan Historic took 4 cars to Silverstone to make the most of the weekend, if you ever get the chance we highly reccomend you come down to see Silverstone Classic . We took the Lotus 91, Ford Mustang, Chevron B8 and Lotus 22.

The weekend was full of racing food and a great concert on Friday and Saturday with music played by the Boomtown rats, The Stranglers, Reef and many more.

We will start with the Ford Mustang, in qualifying we managed to sit the mustang in 14th position on the grid with a best lap time of 2.36.230. Unfortunately we suffered a few engine problems with the Mustang forcing Greg to come into the pits to get some mechanical work done, however Greg was determined to get back out on the track and finish the race, finishing in 28th.

The Chevron race was a race filled with cars as 40 cars lined up on the grid making some of the most beautiful noises you have ever hear don a track circuit. After qualifying Greg found himself near the back of the grid in 33th but 5th in class. During the race Greg was serving in and out of cars moving his way up the pack by 9 positions and moving into 4th in class, just as Greg found some clear track (which wasn’t easy to find) he started to gain on the car which was 3rd in class, unfortunately the race clock was not on Greg side as the race finished with Greg taking 4th in class.

In the Formula Junior there was again a massive grid with 37 cars all fighting for the podium, after qualifying on a very secure 6th position only 4 seconds back from the leader Ander Hibberd. When it came to race one Greg fell back in the pack and eh struggled to find room and lost some crucial time on corners he ended up finishing the race in 8th place. On the Sunday race 2 was the first race of the day and proved to be a good start to the day for Greg as he moved up positions into 5th place capping of a very good race in a tightly packed circuit.

The highlight of the racing weekend for most fans in the Historic F1 cars. Qualifying let Greg show the capacity crowd what he was made of putting the stunning Lotus 91 on 2nd place .900 second behind professional driver Nick Padmore in the Williams FW07C. Along came race 1 on the Saturday under a rare sunny day in Silverstone the cars lined up on the grid for a thrilling race. As soon as the green lights went out the front 3, Nick Padmore, Greg Thornton and Loic Deman left the rest of the pack behind Loic managed to get past Greg in the first corner and then it was tit for tat between Loic and Greg for the rest of the race with Loic coming out on top and taking 2nd place with Greg in 3rd. Sunday came around quickly and so did the 2nd Historic F1 race, Greg got a fantastic start only to fall down into 4th place after 4 laps, realising he needed something special to come back and something even more special to take the win Greg put the pedal to the metal and started to move his way back up the back, getting stuck behind Ollie Hancock who drove some of the best defensive driving we have ever seen Greg got past Ollie and then got past Loic Demand to take 2nf place. With only 5 laps to go Greg started to close the gap on Nick Padmore and looked like he was going to take him for the win in the last 2 laps until they came to traffic. An error from James Hagen who didn’t allow Greg past ended up to cost Greg dearly as he got stuck Loic Demand, Ollie Handcock and Rob Hall for full advantage of the situation and took Greg as he was stuck behind James Hagen leaving Greg to finish the race in 5th and feeling very disappointed.
